We can sometimes have a very dreary February, weather-wise, so we are making sure we have lots of great events to participate in and chase those winter blues away.
Preschool Spaghetti Supper -- Wednesday, Feb 1 at 5:45 pm
This will be the 6th Annual Preschool Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser. Menu includes spaghetti with homemade sauce, meatballs, garlic bread, salad, and cookies for dessert. Proceeds provide scholarships for the preschool. Support the Playground Renovation project by purchasing a cake, slice of pie or other sweet following the Spaghetti Dinner.
Valentine Big Band Bash -- Saturday, Feb 11, at 7:00 pm in Trinity Hall
Time again for our fabulous Valentine's Day Big Band Bash and dessert pot-luck. Come and enjoy the sounds of the Durham Jazz Orchestra, an 18-piece big band plus vocalists. Their music will have you on the dance floor which is provided! Bring along a dessert to share if you wish and we'll celebrate the holiday in good fashion. Open to all, families as well -- kids love the music and also partake of the dance floor!
Mix-It-Up Supper -- Wednesday, Feb 15 at 6:00 pm
The Continuing Conversation group is back with an International Mix-It-Up meal. This time, the format will be more pot-luck. You are invited to prepare a dish to share: a sign-up sheet is on the Reservations bulletin board. Categories include entrees, side dishes, breads, and desserts. If cooking is not in your skill-set, come anyway. There is always enough food!
Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper -- Tuesday, Feb 28 at 6:00 pm
Shrove Tuesday is also called Fat Tuesday (in New Orleans, Mardi Gras) because on this day, households would use up the fatty foods and cooking fat which would not be used during the forty days of Lent. As in the past, we'll party with the finest pancakes, sausage, and applesauce!
Thursday Bible Study Class is beginning a new study in February on the Lord's Prayer. We will be using a book on the Lord's Prayer written by Rev. Dr. J. Warren Smith who is a professor at Duke Divinity School. This study will invite us to an active prayer life, an invitation to re-imagine the prayer as a confession of the Christian faith, and a guide for meditation on the words of the Prayer. Pastor Scott Anderson will be leading the class. Please join us on Thursdays at 10:30 am in the conference room.

February
Transitioning from Green to White to Purple...
Lent comes early this year so we have been Epiphany green in January, will have the white of Transfiguration on February 7 and then Ash Wednesday begins purple on February 10. All in a matter of days.
On Wednesday, February 3, the Preschool is having a fundraising spaghetti supper at 6:00 pm in Trinity Hall. An opportunity for a great meal and lots of fun with the children as we all enjoy their singing. Come out and support the preschool. Proceeds from the meal provide scholarships whereas donations from the bake sale support the playground renovations.
Shrove Tuesday is February 9 when we will have our traditional pancake supper, with sausage and applesauce. Typically, on Shrove Tuesday, also called Fat Tuesday, households used up the fatty foods and cooking fat which would not be consumed during the forty days of Lent. Come out at 6 pm to enjoy the pancakes (regular and chocolate chip) and prepare for Lent.
Wednesday, February 10 is Ash Wednesday and we will have worship services, including the imposition of ashes, at 12:00 noon and 7:00 pm.
Then on Friday, February 12 the Valentine's Day Big Band Bash will take place at 7:00 pm in Trinity Hall. Come and enjoy the sounds of the Durham Jazz Orchestra, an 18 piece band plus vocalists. All ages will enjoy the music from the big-band era and the dance floor will be open if you are so inclined. Please bring some sweet or salty dessert treats to share with others.
Throughout Lent, there will be Wednesday Night suppers at 6:00 pm and Lenten devotions at 7:00 pm worship services. On Fridays at noon during Lent, Rev. Lorrel Strom-Jensen will be offering meditations on the Stations of the Cross in our sanctuary.
On Sunday, February 21 at 3:00 pm, we will have a presentation of War Room. Come join us for this powerful movie on the power of prayer -- popcorn included.

News and Notes for March
Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper
St. Paul's has a tradition of Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on the evening before Ash Wednesday -- which this year is Tuesday, March 4 -- Mardi Gras! Shrove Tuesday originated during the Middle Ages. Food items like meats, fats, eggs, milk, and fish were regarded as restricted during Lent. To keep such food from being wasted, many families would have big feasts on Shrove Tuesday in order to consume those items that would inevitably become spoiled during the next forty days. Feasting on pancakes! Come out at 6:00 pm for the Shrove Tuesday pancake supper which of course includes pancakes (several varieties), sausage, and applesauce! A free-will offering will be accepted at the meal to help support Duke Lutheran Campus Ministry.
Ash Wednesday worship services will take place at 12:00 noon and 7:00 pm in the sanctuary and includes the imposition of ashes as well as Holy Communion.
Mid-Week Lent Suppers and Worship
Join us for supper at 6:00 pm in Trinity Hall before each of the mid-week worship services at 7:00 pm in the sanctuary. Dates are: March 12, 19, 26, April 2, and 9. These will be simple meals but since they are every week, extra help is always welcomed.

The Wellesley College Choir was founded in 1900 and has a long tradition of bringing young women together through music and enriching their time at Wellesley. One of the best ways the choir does this is through their annual tour. Some of their recent tours have included visits to New Orleans, Nashville, Memphis, Portugal and Canada. This year they are excited to be visiting North Carolina, DC, and Virginia. Their concert at St. Paul's will feature music ranging from Hildegard Motets to more contemporary songs. A suggested $5 donation will benefit the Genesis Home which works to end homelessness for families with children by providing housing and supportive services to foster independence.
Applications are available now in the foyer for:
Vacation Bible School -- SonWest Roundup - June 23-27, 9:00 am - 12:30 pm, Monday through Friday
